Destination CAP FERRET: Travel Guide & Best Things to Do
I’m sharing my little piece of paradise in France, where I got married. Cap Ferret is a peninsula located in Arcachon Bay (Bassin d’Arcachon) on the South West Coast. It’s surrounded by water on three sides: the Atlantic Ocean on two sides and the Bay, a vast shallow lagoon on the other side. This is part of my home in France. Arcachon Bay is where my parents and brother live and where I spent my teenage years. Cap Ferret is located on the opposite side of the Bay from where my parents live. It’s the very last village at the far end of the peninsula (see map below). You can access it from Bordeaux after about an hour drive. Paris is only two hours away by train from Bordeaux.
I love the laid-back and authentic charm the Cap Ferret offers. Americans compare it with Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons. This secluded beach resort was the backdrop of the famous French Movie: “Les Petits Mouchoirs” (Little White Lies) with Marion Cotillard.
Here it’s all about enjoying the simple things in life. You go swimming or surfing, explore the fishermen villages along the Bay by bike and eat plenty of fresh oysters right by the water. You can travel across the Bay by ferry from the Cap Ferret Pier to Arcachon and vice versa. This way you can spend the day exploring the other side of the Bay. You can even bring bikes on the ferry. By the way Cap Ferret is famous for its oyster farming and supplies all of France. You will find wooden oyster shacks offering oyster tastings everywhere. You savor them with bread and butter and a glass of white wine. I recommend that you try the Cap Ferret oysters, because they will be the freshest and most delicious oysters that you’ve had in your life! The best size to eat raw oysters is size 3 or 4…and don’t forget about the cafés and the cute little shops in the town centre.
