Mahekal Beach Resort Review (2026): A Luxury Boutique Hotel in Playa del Carmen

Mahekal Beach Resort Review (2026): A Luxury Boutique Hotel in Playa del Carmen

This review is long overdue. My husband and I have stayed at Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen many times and it has become our first choice whenever we are looking for an easy, relaxing vacation in an upscale setting.

We returned to the resort earlier this year in January to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Let me walk you through what this luxury boutique hotel in Mexico is all about, so that you can decide whether it’s the right place for your next Riviera Maya getaway.

Location:

The location of this Playa del Carmen boutique hotel is a major highlight. The Mayan-style resort is situated just off Fifth Avenue, the town’s main street which is lined with restaurants, bars and shops. For adventure seekers, there are also cenotes in the area.

Fifth Avenue is only a five-minute walk from the hotel’s front gate to reach the heart of the action while still enjoying a peaceful environment inside the resort.

From Cancun International Airport, the drive takes approximately one hour depending on traffic. I highly recommend Cancun Airport Transportations for a reliable private shuttle service. We’ve used them for every trip to Mahekal and the experience has always been seamless.

We love that they offer the option to pre-order drinks for the ride when booking your transfer. It’s a small detail that instantly puts you in vacation mode the moment you step into the van!

Amenities:

Although the resort has an intimate and private atmosphere, it offers all of the amenities of a larger property. You’ll find five pools, each with a different ambiance and setting. There are two larger main pools and the others are smaller and feel more secluded.

Even when the resort is busy it never feels crowded, which is exactly what we love about this place.

We are also big fans of the restaurants and the food. When booking, you can choose between half board or all-inclusive. We always opt for half board, including breakfast and dinner. It’s incredibly convenient not having to think about where to go in the evening.

When we come to Mahekal Beach Resort, it’s truly to relax (meaning to do absolutely nothing) and recharge. So, we love not having to leave the resort for meals.

There are also two bars, including a pool bar, as well as an on-site Starbucks. This is especially convenient for guests who book a room-only stay and want to grab a quick coffee or treat in the morning.

As expected from a true relaxation haven, the resort also features a spa. There is a fitness center as well, for those who want to stay active during their vacation.

In addition, Mahekal offers a variety of complimentary daytime activities such as yoga classes, ceramic painting and full moon ceremonies. I’ve personally never signed up for one, but it’s great to have the option.

Comfort:

The resort offers a variety of accommodations, ranging from casitas with king beds or two queen beds (with garden or ocean views), to penthouses, suites, and beach houses with private plunge pools.

We always book their king-bed casitas with palapa roofs for their rustic charm (the roofs are made from dried palm leaves). Although these are considered their “standard” rooms, they still feel luxurious.

This time, we were upgraded to an ocean-view king palapa room for my husband’s birthday. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated with a Mayan-inspired design, featuring neutral tones and artisanal details. It creates a tropical atmosphere that instantly puts you in vacation mode.

The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked perfectly. Be sure to take advantage of the hammocks on the terrace. We make a point to enjoy them every time we visit.

The bathroom was equally spacious with a large rainfall shower. Additional thoughtful touches included an in-room espresso maker and a mini-fridge to keep water and drinks cool.

Cleanliness:

The resort is impeccably clean and very well maintained. Housekeeping did an excellent job refreshing our room daily.

All common areas from the pool deck to the beach pathways were spotless. We’ve never experienced any issues with cleanliness during our stays.

Service:

I truly cannot praise the staff enough. They are warm, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to making your stay memorable.

For my husband’s birthday, they went above and beyond. Our room was decorated with flowers, balloons, and a birthday banner. They even crafted a “cake” out of towels and placed it on the bed. Such a creative and thoughtful touch!

Later, a staff member arrived with champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries and the surprises didn’t stop there! When we returned to our room at the end of the day to get ready for dinner, a real birthday cake had been delivered and set on the table. Another attention that my husband greatly appreciated.

At dinner the celebration continued: a mariachi band came to our table to sing “Happy Birthday,” while a waiter brought out a dessert with a lit candle.

These thoughtful gestures are what truly set the service apart. They know exactly how to make you feel special and it’s these small details that make the experience unforgettable.

Value:

I personally think the half-board option is an excellent value to add to your stay. Both breakfast and dinner are delicious and generous. They are usually served buffet-style, allowing you to choose what you like and go back for more.

In other words, you can eat as much as you want and the quality of the food remains consistently very good.

The hotel embraces an authentic Mayan-chic aesthetic that you notice from the moment you arrive. Everything is beautifully designed, from the rooms to the pools and the lush grounds. This is an upscale boutique resort and it truly feels like a little slice of paradise.

Pros & Cons:

✔ Pros:

  • Intimate, peaceful atmosphere with a true boutique luxury feel

  • Beautiful Mayan-inspired design and lush, well-maintained grounds

  • Multiple pools with different ambiances, never feels crowded

  • Excellent location just steps from Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, yet quiet and secluded

  • Spacious, comfortable rooms with charming palapa roofs

  • High-quality food with generous buffet-style breakfast and dinner

  • Half-board option offers great value and convenience

  • Thoughtful, attentive service with personalized touches

  • On-site amenities including spa, fitness center, and activities (yoga, painting, etc.)

  • Easy access from Cancun International Airport

✖ Cons:

  • Beach service can be slow at times, especially near the Fuego restaurant

  • Rooms in the Oasis section may be noisy due to nearby nightlife

  • Not ideal for travelers seeking a lively or party atmosphere

  • Limited need to leave the resort (which may feel too quiet for some)

CONCLUSION:

I highly recommend this boutique hotel on the Riviera Maya if you’re looking for an intimate, peaceful, and upscale place to stay. It’s truly one of the best resorts in Playa del Carmen.

This property is the epitome of quiet luxury without breaking the bank. In my opinion, this is a great value and almost everything is fantastic: the decor, the cleanliness, the service, the staff and the food.

That said, if you’re looking for a lively, party-oriented atmosphere, this is not the place for you.

As you can probably tell, I absolutely love this resort. All the elements mentioned above are the reasons why my husband and I keep coming back to Mahekal.

However, no honest hotel review would be complete without mentioning a few imperfections. While Mahekal comes very close to perfect, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Service at the beach can sometimes be a bit slow, especially when ordering food or drinks from the Fuego restaurant while lounging in that area.

Also, if you book a room in the Oasis section (located at the back of the resort), it can be somewhat noisy at night, as you may hear music from the bars and clubs along Fifth Avenue.

That said, these are only some minor details in what is otherwise a truly magical place, perfect for resting, disconnecting, and recharging.

I hope this review will help you decide where to stay in Playa del Carmen.

XO from your favorite French Girl! 😉
